Sealants and Decay Prevention
We believe strongly in the prevention of dental disease and decay. We do this through education and instruction on the most effective oral hygiene techniques, sealants in children when indicated and fluoride when useful. Placing sealants on to permanent molars soon after they erupt into a child’s mouth (this typically starts to happen around age 6) can help protect those teeth against dental decay. Often, molars have deep pits and grooves where plaque and bacteria can hide and form cavities. If we are able to cover and seal those grooves right away, we may be able to prevent cavities from forming in those difficult to clean locations. Since permanent teeth begin to erupt into a child’s mouth from around 6 years of age, those teeth need to stay in good shape for a very long time to last a person their lifetime.
If patients are interested, fluoride is also an extremely helpful tool for helping to prevent dental decay and for reversing early cavities. Fluoride is naturally occurring and additional fluoride treatments or fluoride containing toothpaste can actually help provide the mineral necessary protect from early cavities or stop and reverse those early cavities from becoming any larger.
