Surgical Extractions and Wisdom Tooth Removal
In many patients there is not enough room in the back of the jaw for the third molars or “wisdom teeth” to erupt into position. When there isn’t enough space for them to come passively into position, they may get “stuck” under the gums or the bone. This is referred to as “impacted”. Depending on its position, the impacted wisdom tooth may cause problems for the otherwise healthy erupted second molar. It could cause decay or periodontal pocketing and bone loss. For these reasons, it is often recommended that the impacted wisdom tooth be removed as soon as it is recognized that the tooth has no chance for proper eruption.
